释义	函谷关①旧函谷关。战国秦置。在今河南灵宝市东北。东自崤山，西至潼津，绝岸壁立，谷深道狭，深险如函，通称函谷，号称天险。因关在谷中而得名。《资治通鉴》：秦王政六年（前241），楚、赵、魏、韩、卫合纵以伐秦，“至函谷，秦师出，五国之师皆败走”；西汉高帝元年（前206），刘邦西入关中，“使兵守函谷关，无内诸侯军”；后项羽“使黥布等攻破函谷关”，皆即此。汉初置关都尉戍守。元鼎三年（前114）徙关于新安县后，改置弘农县。现仅存关门。②新函谷关。在今河南新安县东。西汉元鼎三年移此，去故关三百里。东汉中平元年（184）为了镇压黄巾起义，置八关，此为八关之首。三国魏正始元年（240）废。今遗址尚存，陇海铁路经此。
