扬州教案①清同治七年（1868）英国内地会传教士戴德生（James Hudson Taylor，1832—1905）在扬州强行租屋，开设教堂，愤怒的民众将其住所捣毁。英国驻上海领事麦华陀（Walter Henry Medhurst，1823—1885）赶至扬州“查办”。因要挟未逞，遂率军舰四艘赴南京进行威胁。两江总督曾国藩竟满足麦华陀的“一切条件”，将扬州知府撤职，赔偿教会损失，并在教堂门前立碑，申明保护外国教会。②清光绪十七年（1891），长江中下游教案迭起，扬州会党纷纷贴出揭贴，历诉教会的罪恶，并斥责“官府受贿，保护洋人”。三月聚众五、六千人包围教堂，“声如鼎沸”，清政府派兵弹压。
