释义	江州①古邑名。即今重庆市嘉陵江北岸。本古巴国国都，秦灭巴（前316）后置县。②西晋元康元年（291）分荆、扬二州置。因江水得名。治南昌县（今江西南昌市）。辖境相当今江西、福建二省和湖北长江以南、陆水以东以及湖南舂陵水中上游以东地区。自东晋至南朝陈，治所屡有迁徙，或治武昌县（今湖北鄂州市），或治湓城（今江西九江市。隋开皇九年置寻阳县，定治于此。唐改为浔阳县，五代南唐又改为德化县），或治半洲（今九江市西），或治柴桑县（今九江市西南）。辖境渐小。隋大业三年（607）改为九江郡。唐武德四年（621）复为江州。开元二十一年（733）后属江南西道。辖境限于今九江、瑞昌、德安、彭泽、湖口、星子、都昌等市、县地。北宋属江南东路，南部辖境又缩。南宋属江南西路。元至元十四年（1277）升为江州路。
